The Challenge.
NHS Primary Care faced rising pressure to reduce operational costs and improve sustainability across its facilities. Rising energy consumption from heating, lighting and air conditioning was driving up expenses and adding unnecessary carbon emissions.
The organisation needed a smart building solution that could monitor and control environmental conditions in real time, reduce energy waste, and create a healthier, more comfortable environment for staff and patients.
Manual control of heating and lighting often led to waste: radiators running in empty rooms, lights left on overnight, and windows open while heating was active. NHS Primary Care needed an automated, data-driven way to manage these systems intelligently and sustainably.
The Solution.
UMA partnered with NHS Primary Care to design and implement a Smart Building system that brought multiple environmental and energy management technologies into one platform.
The solution connected radiator TRV valves, air conditioning sensors, IAQ sensors and window magnet sensors to UMA, enabling real-time monitoring and automated control of building conditions. Through intelligent automation, UMA was able to:
- Turn off lights in unoccupied areas.
- Detect and alert when windows were left open.
- Adjust heating levels automatically based on occupancy and temperature.
- Monitor air quality to maintain healthy indoor conditions.
The platform also provided comprehensive energy reporting, giving NHS Primary Care visibility of consumption patterns and the opportunities for further efficiency.
The Outcome.
The Smart Building deployment delivered measurable results for NHS Primary Care. Energy consumption from heating and electricity fell significantly, lowering operational costs and shrinking the carbon footprint. Automated controls made sure energy was only used when and where it was needed, while real-time alerts prevented waste from open windows or unnecessary heating.
